Headaches & Migraines

NUCCA and Migraines

nucca and migrainesAre you or someone you know one of the 45 million Americans who suffer from chronic recurring headaches? Are you looking for answers that go beyond just treating the symptoms? At Advanced Spinal Care, we focus on correcting the underlying cause of your headaches, instead of just masking the pain with medications.

While there are several different types of headaches, (150 diagnostic headache categories have been established!) the two most common are tension and migraine headaches.

Tension headaches are also known as chronic daily headache or chronic non-progressive headache and symptoms include:

  • *A headache that is constant, not throbbing, usually with the pain or pressure felt on both sides of the head.
  • *Pressure that feels like the head is in a vise.
  • *Aching pain at the temples or the back of the head and neck.

Tension headaches can last from 30 minutes to several days. They are the most common type of headache among both adults and adolescents.

Migraine headaches are characterized by an intense, throbbing pain, most often on one side of the head, and may last anywhere from 4-72 hours. They may or may not be accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting and coldness in the hands and feet. Some migraine sufferers experience an ‘aura’ (visual disturbance) prior to the actual onset of the headache.

Medical Approach to Headaches & Migraines:

The medical approach to headache and migraine pain focuses primarily on the use of medications aimed at reducing the pain or relieving the associated symptoms, like nausea. Medications, however, do not address the cause of the headaches, and may, in fact, trigger a ‘rebound effect’ for future headaches in addition to having other unpleasant or dangerous side effects.
The NUCCA Approach to Headaches & Migraines:

While the exact cause of headaches and migraines is unknown, there is evidence to suggest that these headaches may be triggered by trauma to the neck and head area even though the pain may not develop until years later. Misalignments in the upper neck can cause irritation to the nerves traveling between the brain and spinal cord and to the blood vessels traveling to the head. NUCCA chiropractic can help provide relief by correcting these misalignments thereby restoring normal nerve and blood flow. Many patients suffering from headache pain are able to get long term relief from their symptoms through NUCCA chiropractic care.

Advanced Spinal Care sees more headache and migraine sufferers than any other patient type. The reason is simple. NUCCA chiropractic care offers a natural, drug free approach so effective that most patients notice significant pain relief in days. Read testimonials from real patients, on how NUCCA chiropractic helped them!

Research:

“Cervical spine manipulation was associated with significant improvement in headache outcomes in trials involving patients with neck pain and/or neck dysfunction and headache.”

– Duke Evidence Report, McCrory, Penzlen, Hasselblad, Gray (2001)

“The results of this study show that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches. . . Four weeks after cessation of treatment . . . the patients who received spinal manipulative therapy experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in all major outcomes in contrast to the patients that received amitriptyline therapy, who reverted to baseline values.” – Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Boline et al. (1995)
